The new year always begins with new beginnings, new goals, serious intentions, and 2nd chances. The new year also brought a new competition season with it, and let me tell you, my daughters coach did not come to play. Let me give you an idea of what this season brings and why I started this blog. I know there are people experiencing the same thing!

My daughter joined the Phenomnal Dance Comapany of Milwaukee last January. The PDC4L is the competition team for Phenomnal Dance Company, where my 7 year old is a student and a member of the Mini Competition Team. We compete in majorette competitions not only in Milwaukee, but throughout the Midwest region. Majorette Dance is a style of dance that when most hear it, they think of baton twirlers, band uniforms, flags, and parades. However, the type of majorette dance my daughter participates in is modeled after the majorette dance teams at Historically Black Colleges and Universities. It is a mixture of hip hop, jazz, and a few other genres where dancers learn rhythmic routines and “battle” it out on the floor. Competition categories include Field Show, Parade, Creative, Walk Thru, and the coveted STAND BATTLE! This is the most exciting part of the competition as teams go head to head in an all out dance battle. If you have ever seen the show Bring It! on Lifetime, then you know exactly what I’m talking about. This is the world of dance we have entered.

Kenia is on the far left, front row, with the pink tutu on. Ready to perform their creative!

My daughter, Kenia, has been on the team exactly 1 year. When my daughter first started, I really did not anticipate her competing in any upcoming competitions that year because she had NEVER taken a dance class before. She was new to everything about majorette dance so competing was just not something I was focused on. Boy was I wrong! My daughter made cuts (the process by which dancers are chosen to compete) and competed in her first competition literally a month after she began. She has been making cuts ever since and my family was thrown into the world of majorette and everything that comes with it!

Just a few trophies we collected at a competition in Augusta, GA.

Well here we are, 1 year in, and a new competition season is upon us! Our first competition is February 1st, and cuts are literally this weekend! That’s right, there is no downtime with this studio, competition season has begun so that means we compete!

This competition season is a big one though, a little different than the past year. This year for the spring we only have 3 competitions because our last competitions of the season will be in none other than Atlanta, Georgia. WTF!!! The team is going to Atlanta to compete and I am beyond ready. IDK how we are going to pay for it, but with a lot of hustle and prayer, I think we can get it done! Outside of the this huge competition in GA, we have several parades and some special performances on our plate as well. Then, as the season comes to an end, our team will host our own competition…Now that I’ve written it all out and read everything, yeah, it’s not that mild of a season. We will be busy, just not traveling as much as we did last spring and fall.
